[Description]

Work in this knowledge area is focussed on R&D&i in the field of wireless communications and mobile devices to provide innovative technological solutions in the health field in order to facilitate the development of projects included in the group’s strategic programme. This includes work on ubiquitous communication channels, which provide communication among users of applications for improving quality of life or among those who receive health or social care.

The new wireless communication technologies and mobile devices offer a communication channel between users (patients, people with special needs, general public, etc.) and service providers (medical personnel, health centres, social workers, etc.), wherever they may be. Data can be sent through these devices (questionnaires relating to health, quality of life or social assistance, photos and video, videostreaming, videoconferencing, voice, vital signs and telemetry, alarms, warnings, advice, etc.). They also provide access to any necessary remote information (medical history, information on diseases, nutrition, etc.). These facilities are available to users at any time and wherever they may be.

This Area also works on developing wireless location and monitoring systems. Monitoring, both of a patient’s vital signs and of parameters from his surroundings, forms the basis for the development of multiple projects. The possibility of acquiring this information without the complication of cables adds to the possibilities of the success of future products derived from R&D&i projects.

This Area of Knowledge is divided into two well-defined lines:

The Hardware Infrastructure Line: in charge of the design and making of specific hardware devices, usually related to wireless communications, and their integration into the necessary hardware infrastructures for the development of group products and projects. Its main achievements are the following:

  • Body area network for monitoring of patients without the need for cables.
  • Location network based on IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee technology.
  • Integration of sensors and monitorisation devices for communication through wireless channels using IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee and Bluetooth technology.
  • Communication channels through Wide-Area Wireless Networks: GPRS, UMTS, Wi-Max.
  • The use in health centres of Local Area Wireless networks based on Wi-Fi technology: (b and g versions of IEEE 802.11).

The Mobile Devices Software Line: in charge of maintaining and renewing knowledge on the capabilities of present and future mobile devices (mobile telephones, PDAs, etc.), development tools (mainly Java – J2ME, .Net Compact Framework and Symbian), and of the development of generic and specific software modules for application in group projects. Its main achievements are:

  • Mobile telephone connection module with server through TCP/IP socket or Web Service for sending multimedia information (photos, video, monitored data, questionnaires, etc.).
  • Module for acquiring photos and videos in mobile phones.
  • Bluetooth module for connection with monitoring control devices (mobile phones, PDAs, etc.), vital signs monitoring devices (ECG, pulsioxymeters, blood pressure, etc.) by Bluetooth (Wireless Personal Area Networks).
  • Bar code reading module by photography for mobile telephones.
  • Electrocardiogram compression module for mobile telephones.
  • Other mobile telephone modules: insertion of items into mobile phone contacts lists, SMS processing, web server for mobile phones.

The evolution of knowledge in this area is constant, and at present work is being carried out on the following technological concepts:

  • Design and development of a wireless network of sensors in a grid, based on Zigbee, specified on standard IEEE 802.15.4.
  • Design and development of a Zigbee adaptor for PDAs.
  • Application of RFID technology in different projects for the identification of objects and situations.
  • Module for image-sending in real time (videostreaming) from mobile phone to PC.
  • Platform for applications of Environmental Intelligence based on the monitoring of ambient and corporal parameters, location, and knowledge of the context.
